The New Year Music Challenge: Week IV
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders I have now come to the end of my three week Tribe quest (pun totally intended).  I would be lying if this album did not suffer from the fact that I was getting tired of the Tribe after two weeks already, however, that alone, did not totally keep me from getting down with this great collection of jams.  Everything about this album was a winner.  It had...

Question #1
What is your favorite Gary Oldman movie? I could say the Batman movies, simply because he plays a good guy and that does not happen often.  However, his role in those films is fairly minimal.  Then I could say it was The Professional, but everyone and their dog wants to name that one off and, to be honest, I have seen better films.  I think I am gonna have to go with Rosencrantz &...

Ask Anything
I am thinking that I need some prompts to help me write more smaller scale posts. I have some big scale posts planned but they take more preparation and time to write. So, in that case, ask me anything you want and I will try my best to answer it. I am not even sure I have an ask link on my Tumblr, if not then just respond to this post with the question and I will pull them off those responses....

Is already toying with the idea of making next year a year devoted singularly to Tom Waits.  But we will see how this year of hip hop treats me first before I start making too solid a plan.

Books: Those I Wish I Could Finish and Those I...
Those I Wish I Could Finish Great book that attempts to define the Christian’s role in the life of culture.  It uses the act of creation in Genesis to relay how Christians are supposed to work towards the redemption of culture by making culture, much like God created the Earth and everything on it.  It is a mind-blowing read, which is ultimately why I haven’t finished it.  Too much...

A Little Unknown Fact About Bill Cosby
His 1976 education dissertation (yes, he has a legitimate doctorate) was entitled, “An Integration of the Visual Media Via ‘Fat Albert And The Cosby Kids’ Into the Elementary School Curriculum as a Teaching Aid and Vehicle to Achieve Increased Learning”. That is just flippin’ sweet.

The New Year Music Challenge: Week III
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory After hearing Tribe’s first album, it was really hard for me to imagine their second outing to be better.  Jeff W. had given me his ordering of their albums and The Low End Theory was his first pick.  I was, however, unconvinced.  I really loved their first album.  After the first two days of listening to this album, I had gotten to like some of...

The Burden of the Past (aka Surviving White Guilt)
18Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased,(AJ) grace abounded all the more, 21so that, as sin reigned in...

Sounds Pulsing Through Life, Pt. V (200th Post)
“Undergraduate, Pt. 2” In order to deal with the second part of my undergraduate years, there is one important part that must be discussed before I deal with the music that I consumed at this point.  I call the last two years of my undergrad career as “The Baylor Years.”  This is not because I moved to Waco and went to Baylor, but because I moved into a house on Baylor Dr....

The New Year Music Challenge: Week II
A Tribe Called Quest - People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm It wasn’t until I began listening to this album the Sunday before last that I realized how difficult that first week was.  Though I admired the Atmosphere album in many ways, it was kind of depressing and it felt a bit like trudging through thick mud as the week went on.  This album gave me reason to be...

The New Year Music Challenge: Week I
Atmosphere - Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs The whole point of this exercise is to resist the track buttons and to listen to the full album, all the way through as many times as possible in a week.  I don’t think I have ever listened to any album this exclusively and focused.  It was an extremely difficult task at times when all that I wanted to do was switch to some other music or...
